Brief description of the department's activities
The Department of Barley Breeding and Primary Seed Production is a structural subdivision of the Kyrgyz Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture named after K.K.
Azykov, which is engaged in creating new barley varieties and providing them with primary seed material for further propagation.
The department carries out the development and implementation of new crop varieties characterized by high yield, resistance to adverse conditions, and compliance with production requirements.
The main areas of work include hybridization, selection of promising lines, organization of field trials, and scientific and methodological support of the breeding process.
The division ensures obtaining and maintaining the purity of the primary seed material (superelite, elite) necessary for further propagation and transfer to farms.
The department's activities are aimed at strengthening the seed base, increasing the efficiency of the agricultural sector, and ensuring food security of the country.

Main research areas
Creation of new varieties - Development of barley varieties with high yield, resistance to diseases, drought, and other stress factors

Key results and achievements of the department
Spring barley varieties Naryn 27, Nutans 970, Nutans 89, Taalaay, Bestam, Vatan, Vladlen, Kylym, Maksat and new varieties, winter barley varieties Ardak, Zhenish 60, Gauhar, Belek, Adel, Alta were developed. In 2025, new promising spring barley varieties with working numbers 7100/5 and 7012 were developed.

In the next 3–5 years, the department's activities will focus on the following areas:
- Breeding: development of new barley varieties resistant to abiotic stresses and major diseases, with increased yield potential.
- Primary seed production: improvement of the seed certification and quality control system, expansion of production areas.
- Infrastructure and personnel: modernization of the laboratory base, training of young specialists, and professional development of employees.

Material and technical base
Breeding nurseries are located on the territory of the Kyrgyz Scientific and Production Association for Agriculture in Pervomaiskoye village, Sokuluk district, Chuy region.
